Day 5: Sleep Cleaning

Have you ever had one of those nights where you just can't sleep? Where you just toss and turn and feel like your eyes have been taped open? Yep, I thought so.

What do you do when you find yourself wide awake in the middle of the night? It seems completely useless to just lie there and stare at the clock. So, why not do something productive? Yes, yes, yes, I know. They say reading a soothing book, or drinking a warm cup of milk with some honey do better at lulling us to sleep, but I find that I sometimes need to just get up and DO something.

Last night just happened to be one of those nights. I was wound up tighter than a top and I had so much energy that just had to be spent in a way other than finishing the novel I had been reading just a couple of hours before. So, I got up and cleaned.

Oh, no...I did not intend to do it on purpose. It was one of those moments where one moment of tidying up turned into a momentous occasion of having a completely polished kitchen, bedroom, living room, and master bath.

I do have to say that the encouragement came from seeing the now empty bookshelf and feeling the need to dust it and put order to the items left sitting upon its shelves. Then, it led to ordering the CDs and DVDs on the shelves next to my television. Then the trashcans, the sinks, the floors, the, the, the...well...

This evening, my heart fell in love with walking into a home that is tidy with a clean sink and no piles of mail and papers on the counter tops. To walk into the master bath and see the counter organized and clean. Well, it was as neat and tidy as the owner of a 4 month old puppy and a grumpy old 6 year old dog would be. But, I have to say that I think the simplifying task is starting to rub off on them, as I found two massacred toys, both of which used to be stuffed. I do have to laugh as they kept the stuffing in one corner, and not strewn all over the house.

But, the thing about this is that despite not getting that sleep I so longed for last night, I was able to start my weekend off with, what seems to me like, order in my life.

But, tomorrow is the family's traditional waffle breakfast day...let's see how long the neatness lasts with that one.
